Summary
- Your files never reach our server. They travel directly between your devices, encrypted by your browser.
- No account, no sign-up. We don’t ask for your name, email or phone number to use the service.
- Our server only introduces devices. It briefly handles a device name and connection details while your page is open, and keeps nothing after you leave.
- We don’t sell your data and we don’t use cookies of our own.
Who we are
Local File Transfer (“we”, “us”) runs the website localfiletransfer.com, a free tool for sending files and text between devices from a web browser. We are based in Pakistan. You can reach us at apptechcodex3@gmail.com.
What we process
Files and text you send. These go directly from your device to the device you choose, using WebRTC with encryption built into the browser. They are never uploaded to or stored on our server. On some networks a direct connection isn’t possible; in that case an encrypted relay may forward the data, and the relay cannot read it.
Connection information. To introduce two devices, our server briefly handles:
- the device name shown on the radar (a random name such as “Calm Otter”, or one you choose);
- the device type and a browser and system label, such as “Android · Chrome”;
- a random session identifier, and the six-digit room code if you use one;
- your IP address, used to show you devices on the same network;
- technical connection messages that the two browsers exchange to connect, which include network addresses.
We don’t receive file names, file contents or the text you send.
What the other device sees
The device you connect with sees your device name and type. As with any direct browser connection, it may also learn your device’s network address (IP address). Only connect with devices you trust, and use the Accept prompt: no file is saved on your device unless you accept it.
Third-party services
- Google Fonts. Your browser loads our fonts from Google’s servers, so Google receives your IP address. See Google’s Privacy Policy.
- STUN server. To find the best route between devices, your browser asks a public STUN server operated by Google for your public network address.
- Hosting provider. Our hosting provider may keep standard server logs, such as IP addresses and the time of a request, for security and reliability.
Advertising
To keep the service free, we may show ads. When ads are shown, they are served by third-party vendors, including Google. These vendors use cookies to show ads based on your previous visits to this and other websites. Google’s advertising cookies let it and its partners show ads based on those visits.
You can turn off personalised ads from Google in Ads Settings, and opt out of personalised ads from many other vendors at aboutads.info. Read how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
How we use information
We use the information above only to connect your devices, to protect the service from abuse (for example, by limiting how many connections one network can open) and to fix problems. We don’t build profiles of visitors and we don’t sell or rent personal information. If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we rely on our legitimate interest in providing the service you asked for.
How long we keep it
Connection information is held in our server’s memory only while your page is open, and is gone when you close it. We don’t keep logs of device names, room codes or connections. Emails you send us are kept only as long as needed to answer you.
Security
The site is served over HTTPS, transfers are encrypted end to end by the browser, and every incoming file must be accepted before it is saved. No system is perfectly secure, so only send files to devices you recognise.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, and to have it corrected or deleted. Because we don’t keep records about visitors, there is usually nothing stored to return or delete, but we will always answer your request. Residents of California: we don’t sell or share personal information. Write to apptechcodex3@gmail.com with the subject “Privacy request”.
Children
The service is not directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle data, we will update this page and the effective date at the top. Significant changes will be announced on the homepage.
